Shrawan Maas 2026 — The Sacred Month of Shiva & How to Honour Him at Home

Shrawan Maas is here. The most beloved month of Lord Shiva — a time of fasting, devotion, and deep surrender. Here's how to make it truly sacred at home.

🌙 What is Shrawan Maas?

Shrawan (also spelled Sawan) is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar — and the holiest month dedicated to Lord Shiva. Falling in July–August, it is believed that prayers offered during Shrawan carry a thousand times more power than on ordinary days.

The air changes. Devotees wake before dawn. Temples overflow with bilva leaves and milk. Mondays — Shrawan Somvar — become the most auspicious days of the year for Shiva worship.

But you don't need to travel to a temple to feel that energy. You can bring it home.

🔱 Why Shrawan is the Month to Establish a Shiva Murti at Home

In Shaivite tradition, establishing a Shiva murti during Shrawan is considered especially auspicious. The divine energy of the month amplifies the sanctity of the idol — and the daily ritual of offering water, bilva, and incense becomes a powerful anchor for the entire year ahead.

"Shrawan ke mahine mein Shiv ki aradhana karne se manokamna poori hoti hai."
— A prayer offered to Shiva in Shrawan fulfils the deepest wishes of the heart.

🏠 How to Set Up a Shiva Puja Space at Home

Step 1 — Choose Your Murti

Select a Shiva murti that resonates with you. The most common forms for home worship:

Form Significance Best For
Shivalinga The formless, infinite nature of Shiva Traditional puja, minimalist altars
Nataraja Shiva as the cosmic dancer — creation and destruction Living rooms, artistic spaces
Ardhanarishvara Shiva-Shakti united — balance of masculine and feminine Couples, harmony-seekers
Shiva in meditation Deep stillness, inner peace, transcendence Meditation rooms, home offices
Panchmukhi Shiva Five-faced Shiva — five elements, five directions Sacred collectibles, premium altars

Step 2 — Choose the Right Direction

According to Vastu Shastra:

  • North or East — ideal for placing a Shiva murti
  • Northeast corner (Ishaan Kona) — the most sacred zone of the home, perfect for a mandir
  • Avoid South-facing placement for Shiva idols
  • The murti should face West so you face East while praying

Step 3 — The Daily Shrawan Ritual

The Shrawan puja is simple, powerful, and takes just 10–15 minutes each morning:

  1. Abhishek — Offer water or raw milk over the Shivalinga or murti while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya"
  2. Bilva Patra — Place three bilva (bel) leaves at the base — Shiva's most beloved offering
  3. Dhoop & Diya — Light incense and a ghee lamp
  4. Prasad — Offer fruits, especially those in season
  5. Mahamrityunjaya Mantra — Chant 11 or 108 times for protection and healing

💡 Murti Hub Tip: Keep a small copper or brass bowl near your murti specifically for Shrawan abhishek. It elevates the ritual and keeps your altar clean.

🌿 The 4 Mondays of Shrawan — Somvar Vrat

The four Mondays of Shrawan — Shrawan Somvar — are the most powerful days of the month. Devotees observe a fast, visit Shiva temples, and offer special prayers.

If you have a Shiva murti at home, these four Mondays become deeply personal and intimate moments of worship — no crowds, no rush. Just you and Mahadev.

🎁 Gifting During Shrawan — A Sacred Gesture

Shrawan is one of the most meaningful times to gift a Shiva murti — to a parent, a spouse, a friend who is a Shiva devotee. It carries the energy of the month and becomes a lasting sacred object in their home.

✨ Why a Handcrafted Resin Murti Lasts a Lifetime

Many devotees ask — why resin over clay or plaster?

A handcrafted resin murti from Murti Hub is built to be a permanent sacred object, not a seasonal one. It doesn't dissolve, doesn't chip with daily abhishek (when done gently with a cloth), and the hand-painted finish holds its luminosity for years.

Each murti is painted by hand — no two are identical. When you place it on your altar, it carries the intention of the artisan who made it and the devotion of the home it enters.

That is the Murti Hub difference.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Which Shiva murti is best for home during Shrawan?
A Shiva in meditation form or a Nataraja are most popular for home altars. If you prefer the formless, a Shivalinga is the most traditional choice.

Can I do abhishek on a resin murti?
Yes — gently wipe with a damp cloth as a symbolic abhishek. Avoid pouring water directly on painted resin as it can affect the finish over time. For full water abhishek, a stone or brass Shivalinga is recommended.

What is the best direction to place a Shiva murti at home?
North or East facing, ideally in the Northeast corner (Ishaan Kona) of your home or puja room.

Is Shrawan a good time to buy a new murti?
Yes — establishing a new murti during Shrawan is considered highly auspicious in Shaivite tradition.
